I’m Not a Wedding Photographer

What do insects have to do with wedding photography? Well, after years of turning down gigs using the kind of photography that I have no interest in, weddings, kids, family reunions etc. I have been asked to photograph a wedding that I could not turn down. My nephew and his bride to be, both of whom I love dearly, called me a month ago and asked if I would photograph their upcoming nuptials. They are a lovely couple and since they are having a very small wedding in my hometown in conjunction with our annual family reunion, I said yes.

I have been meaning to update my photography equipment for a while and this presented the perfect excuse. I finally bought a mirrorless camera and some new lenses to go with it. Wildlife lenses of course but also a macro lens I have been wanting for a long time. This lens will also work well for portraits and for most of what I will need at the wedding. I also got a speed lite for the interior of the church photos. Lots of hummingbird photographers use a flash so I am looking forward to trying this on hummingbirds this summer.

I have been playing with the camara lens combo and while I still have some kinks to work out it is exciting to see the level of detail you get with the macro application.

  1. Wait! You’re going to talk about new gear and not tell me/us WHAT the new gear is? Come on, spill!

    (the macro results are fantastic)

      1. Haha… Sounds like a nice set up. Are those the only lenses? (The EF version of that macro lens, I use for portrait stuff and it resolves beautifully on my GFX 100S as well — with some vignetting).

      2. So far, the only lenses. I am slowly divesting myself of my older equipment and trading out for the new. I am happy to hear you use that lens for portraits. I may take some of my older stuff along just in case.

      3. Presuming you are using the EF line now, did you buy the adapter? You might find the EF glass more than capable for some uses…

  2. Good for You 🙂 I had to get rid of my Kodak Hawkeye 30 yrs ago whilst I could not get film developed any where! (heck I could not find film anywhere) I got a digital cam which suits my needs ( not with the bells and whistles like Yours) I now have a printer with photo paper I can’t wait to use 😉

  3. Congratulations on your nephew’s wedding 😊! I, too, avoid any type of photography, such as weddings, but when my nephews asked me to help with photography (engagement and pre-wedding photos), like you, it was a challenge I was more than happy to accept! It is great to see you doing the same – the magic of good people coming together is what makes life special.

Great photos – is the dog a German Wirehair/Drahthaar? I grew up with this breed of dog, one of the best personalities of all breeds, I believe, although our (my parents) current dog is a black lab, which also has an awesome personality.

    1. Thanks for stopping in and commenting. 🙂 I am a little nervous about the wedding, but I am going to practice a lot and over prepare which is my way. LOL. My dog is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. She is often mistaken for a Drahthaar. They look very similar. She is my chukar hunting dog and constant companion.

  4. LOL! Love the title! “weddings, kids, family reunions etc.” I love that this stuff isn’t your jam, yet when it comes to loved ones. . . I hope we’ll see more of the fruits of your new equipment! The fly is fabulous! (Er, I mean, “fly.” 😉 )

    1. Ha! You can count on me posting Macro stuff. It’s a whole new world. I love looking at the detail the camera picks up but that’s what has always fascinated me about photography. 🙂

  5. I gave up on wedding photography many years ago when I was shooting in the pre-digital age with a Canon AE-1. Congratulations on your new gear, the close-ups look amazing.

    1. Thank you. I used to do Rodeo photography and that is the only event photography I was remotely interested in. It was a tremendous amount of work, so I let go of it.
